Joel K. Linebach

Joel K. Linebach is a choreographer, performer, and educator based in Northeast Ohio whose work bridges contemporary dance, science, and technology. He is currently a company member with Inlet Dance Theatre, where he performs repertory by founder Bill Wade, engaging in collaborative improvisation and partner-based practices rooted in release technique. Since earning his MFA in Contemporary Dance from Case Western Reserve University, Linebach has continued to expand both his creative and performance work across regional and national platforms. As a choreographer, Linebach has developed a growing body of work that investigates the relationship between physical movement and polymer systems—whether material, emotional, or structural. His recent works include PHASIC, commissioned for Cleveland Dance Festival and aided with the support of an Assembly for the Arts Boost Fund Grant, which explores crystallinity and phase behavior through movement, and en vie après, a solo examining material lifecycles and transformation, presented in Chicago. Outside of science-based movement, his duet Cairn, co-created with Bird Thurman, has been presented in multiple venues including Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, and New York City. Recently, Thurman and Linebach premiered a new duet, anything you can do..., at the Near West Theatre in Cleveland.  Linebach’s choreography is characterized by an integration of physical rigor, spatial awareness, and conceptual depth, often drawing inspiration from scientific phenomena and translating them into embodied experiences.

In addition to his creative work, Linebach continues to build a diverse performance career. With Inlet Dance Theatre, he has performed in works such as What Do You Do With An Idea, Hotu Matua, and BALListic, while continuing to present his own choreography in festivals and showcases. His performance background also includes training and repertory experience with institutions such as the Paul Taylor Dance Company, where he has studied extensively through multiple intensives and performed excerpts of Taylor repertory. This foundation informs his movement quality, blending clarity, musicality, and athleticism with a strong emphasis on collaborative process. Linebach is also an educator and researcher, having served as a lecturer and instructor at Case Western Reserve University, where he taught contemporary dance technique. His teaching emphasizes experimentation, somatic awareness, and interdisciplinary thinking, encouraging students to explore connections between movement and broader fields of study. Parallel to his work in dance, Linbebach balances his work in the studio with his work in a lab, pursuing a PhD in Macromolecular Science and Engineering that focuses on polymer processing and sustainability. This dual practice directly informs his choreography, positioning movement as a tool for exploring complex scientific ideas.

His interdisciplinary approach has been recognized through several awards, including the Claudio Sellitti Prize for excellence in integrating scientific research with contemporary dance, and the Naomi Wolin Award for Excellence in New Directions in Dance. He has also received support from the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities, which funded his exploration of wearable technology and dancer-generated sound in works such as Kinetic Echoes and Tonal. Across his work, Linebach is driven by a commitment to accessibility, curiosity, and connection. Whether in the studio, the classroom, or on stage, he seeks to create experiences that invite audiences to engage with complex ideas through movement—transforming abstract concepts into something physical, immediate, and deeply human.
