Artistic Statement

Dance making is our form of expression and communication. Our goal is to foster conceptual, intellectual, and innovative thinking, as well as to spark the imagination and creativity of our audience. Through our art, we evoke social awareness and community responsibility. To advance the art of dance making, we push boundaries by rejecting the predetermined notion of what dancers should look like, dance like, and what they ought to be capable of doing.

We are inspired by the need and obligation to share and move others through our work, asking all involved to question thinking and challenge perspectives. Our work represents ideas and themes that can be interpreted in multiple ways, weaving connections with each audience member. Our work is significant because it challenges the viewer to be active in thought and action. It confronts the norm. It is relatable, self-reflecting, and it exposes truths.

The human body and mind is the form and medium through which our work is shared. We use imagery, emotions, and human experiences to construct movement that represents specific concepts and themes exploring space, effort, time, quality, and energy. We believe in "doing", not "showing." We are interested in making movement that is real, tangible and "in the moment". Our work is made of us, it is made of all the artists involved, it is made of life experiences, and most significantly it is made of the observer.

Our Mission

The Movement Project’s mission is to challenge perspectives, evoke social change and bridge communities through the power of movement.

TMP redefines the status quo and questions predetermined notions of what should be. We do so by creating thought provoking work, providing affordable and accessible dance education and performance to all communities, making space for dance and providing programming that supports the needs of today’s local artists.

July 2015, TMP received their 501 c (3) status and is looking forward to growing their efforts in unifying the Cleveland community and supporting artists who call Cleveland their home.

Pilgrim Church

The Movement Project has a new home at Pilgrim Congregational UCC in the beautiful Cleveland neighborhood of Tremont!

Pilgrim and its history are intertwined with the Tremont neighborhood and the greater Cleveland community. Like the Tremont neighborhood where it’s located, Pilgrim church has an intriguing, storied past and bright future. Today, as the church enjoys a new period of revitalization and growth, its members seek to witness to a new generation of believers a message of extravagant welcome, inclusivity and social justice.

TMP began performing at Pilgrim the summer of 2015 and since then has continued growing their relationship with the wonderful people of Pilgrim. March 2017, TMP officially moved into Pilgrim for regular rehearsals, weekly classes and performances. Here's to new beginnings!

The Barn

The Movement Project's barn is located in Richfield, Ohio. The barn was built in 1918 by Bert Hart, the owner of a large celery farm located on the property. Through the early years, the barn served as a boarding location for the horses of the teachers that worked next door at the Richfield High School. In 1923, a house was built on the property. This house also served as a boarding home for female faculty of the Richfield High School.

Through the years, the celery farm was sold off, cutting the farm down to two lovely acres, nestled in the historic district of Richfield Village. Having passed through only a few owners over the years, the property was purchased in 2012 by Co-Artistic Director Megan Gargano and her husband Anthony Gargano. Falling in love with the property, history and the barn, they started right away on transforming the barn into a personal rehearsal space for the company. Thanks to the help of Co-Artistic Director Rebecca Leuszler, company member Grace Nicklos and friends & family, TMP has a new home for the lovely Cleveland summers!

Shaping Collaborations

"Megan and Rebecca of The Movement Project bring a certain joy to their work which is delightful to see. Their performances express a genuine human experience. They do not rely on tricks to dazzle their audiences but instead present cohesive works of art that resonate with deep emotion. They care for their dancers and respect the input of their creative collaborators. As a photographer and videographer, I have found them to be professional and fun to work with. I highly recommend experiencing a Movement Project performance firsthand - and if you get the chance to work with them, take it."
